Falconry experience day review
Falconry and birds of prey experiences are available nationwide, so there’s bound to be one not too far from you.
Each experience is different, using falcons, hawks (ask what the difference is when you get there – your bird of prey handler will love to explain!),eagles or even that silent killer, the owl.
But on all of these featured here, you get to spend half a day or a full day (it’s up to you) with your bird of prey and his trained handler finding out all the secrets of their hunting success and the tricks of the trade that will enable you to become proficient in flying a falcon from your glove.
Of course, you won’t become a skilled falconer in one day – obviously – but it will give you an insight into what’s involved, you’ll get a sense of achievement as your knowledge and skill with these wonderful masters of the air improves, and may even want to pursue it further with a view to becoming a qualified falconer yourself.
So click through on the links above, check out the details of the ones you fancy, choose the one that’s right for you and your budget, and you can buy there and then secure in the knowledge that our price checker is showing you the absolutely best deals available.
But a word of warning: Falcons, hawks, eagles and owls are not lovable little pets, they’re deadly killing machines, and if you’re squeamish, you need to be prepared. If you go out into the fields or countryside flying your bird of prey with the handler, there’s every chance that it will spot a bird or animal that it regards as prey and if it does, your falcon will kill it.
As an example, on our falconry experience, we flew a male Harris Hawk, which is a surprisingly small bird of prey, but powerful beyond imagining. Half way through our time learning to fly him from the glove, Brown (as he was called) was sitting high in a tree when he spotted a young hare hidden deep in a cornfield. Before we knew what was happening Brown swooped like a bolt of lightning and instantly disappeared into the corn, followed immediately by a squeal as the leveret met his end. It was quite a shock to us as we hadn’t expected anything like that (I don’t know why – we just hadn’t thought about it, I guess) but as the falconer said, they’re wild birds and that’s just what they do.
But overall, the thrill of seeing the bird of prey in fabulous action, and flying it from your glove, learning the skill and art of falconry makes for a really amazing experience and one we highly recommend.
